Among other things the Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) bears responsibility for issues regarding technology research funding. In that regard the division of Energy and Environmental Technologies is responsible for all activities in the area of energy. Specific Programmes, like BESTF3, ERA-NET Bioenergy and others are financed by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund (KLIEN); this Fund is endowed by the BMVIT and the BMNT (Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism).

Austria has a variety of research institutes that are working in the field of Bioenergy. Among them are Bioenergy 2020+, WoodK+, the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Joanneum Research as well as Universities (Technical University of Vienna and Graz as well as the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna) and in addition several Universities of applied sciences.

The Austrian Industry is also significantly involved in the R&D process through various large industry companies and furthermore through a wide range of small and medium sized enterprises. The BMVIT as well as the KLIEN are working closely together with these Partners of the public and private Sector.
