The Austrian Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) has responsibility for issues regarding technology research funding. Specifically, the division of Energy and Environmental Technologies is responsible for all activities in the area of energy. Programmes such as BESTF3, ERA-NET Bioenergy and others are financed by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund (KLIEN); KLIEN is funded by BMK and BMLRT (Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism).

Austria has a variety of research institutes that work in the field of Bioenergy. Among them are Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH (BEST), WoodK+, the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Joanneum Research as well as a number of Universities (Technical University of Vienna and Graz; University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna) and several Universities of applied sciences.

Austrian industry is also significantly involved in the R&D process through various large industrial companies and through a wide range of small and medium sized enterprises. The BMK as well as the KLIEN work closely together with partners from the public and private sector.
